Coffs Coast Suicide Prevention Initiative Stakeholder’s Meeting
Yaama Maliyaa (Hello Friends),
My name is Cassandra Gibbs, I am a First Nations woman originally from the small Aboriginal Community of Goodooga in North West NSW. I currently live in Dubbo and work for Wesley Mission in their Lifeforce Program as an Aboriginal Community Development Coordinator. As a part of my role I am tasked with caring for the Coffs Coast Suicide Prevention Initiative based in Coffs Harbour.
Some of you may be new to learning about this initiative and some of you will have been involved since its inception whilst being cared for by the wonderful Jocelyn Box. Jocelyn has since moved on from her role from Wesley Lifeforce and this is where I come in.
I am reaching out to ask you for your support and involvement in getting the Coffs Coast SPI reinvigorated and active within the community again. Please see the flyer below for an upcoming meeting of stakeholders to come together to discuss this process. We would love to have you join us to share your knowledge and wisdom of your experiences within the local community.
My apologies if you have received this email more than once. Looking forward to seeing you on the 30th of June, 2022.
Yaluu (See you soon)

Coffs Harbour Training – Essential Skills in Facilitating Men’s Behaviour Change
There is a valuable training opportunity coming up in July this year.
The program is called ‘Essential Skills in Facilitating Men’s Behaviour Change’ and is offered by NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence. It will be delivered as a combined online and face-to-face medium with 3 days being face-to-face at the Coffs C.ex Club on the 19th, 20th & 21st of July 2022. The facilitators will be Luke Addinsall and Mozammel Haque.
Please do not be deterred by the program name. Whist it is a gateway towards facilitating men’s behaviour change programs, the training essentially provides an opportunity for all service workers engaging with men who are in a journey towards change and where the use of DFV has or is present for them. It can build your skills in having those tricky conversations with men around their choices and build motivation for change. It has also been a great benefit for those supporting women and children, when men are engaged with DFV interventions. Additionally it is a rich space for collaboration and engagement with others for shared knowledge and experiences.
Registrations are open and can be completed via the link in the flyer or by following the link HERE.
For more information, see attached flyer HERE.

Ways to Support Parents of Children with Mild to Moderate Anxiety
Anxiety occurs across a long continuum, from occasional ‘butterflies’, to feelings of panic which can be recurring and disabling. Even though most children who experience mild or occasional anxiety will not need to see a mental health professional, there may be circumstances that mean a referral to a specialist service is important. Learning more about the child’s experience of anxiety helps practitioners and parents to decide when support from a mental health professional may be required.
Co-produced with the Parenting Research Centre (PRC), we have developed two practice guides for children aged 4–8 years and 9–12 years who may be experiencing mild to moderate levels of anxiety. By being aware of anxiety and responding early to their experience, practitioners may prevent children from developing severe and/or persisting anxiety or other mental health concerns in the future.

Dealing with Dangerous Online Challenges
Apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram allow young people to connect with peers, be creative and express themselves through images and videos.
Online dares and challenges encourage users to share videos of themselves or others taking part in a challenging activity. Sometimes, these dares can be creative and inspiring and build a sense of belonging. But young people can also feel pressure to participate, even if the challenge might result in harm to themselves or others.
Platforms usually don’t allow activities that might cause harm. For example, TikTok’s Community Guidelines ban dangerous challenges.
TikTok has also just released a package of information and safety features to help users stay safe around online challenges. The package includes a 4-step process that users need to go through before taking part in challenges, and they’ve also made it easier to report dangerous challenges.
Learn more about dangerous online challenges and how you can talk to young people about them and minimise the potential for harm.

13YARN – Call 13 92 76 – 24 /7 Crisis support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
13YARN [Thirteen YARN] is the first national crisis support line for mob who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. We offer a confidential one-on-one yarning opportunity with a Lifeline-trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter who can provide crisis support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 13YARN empowers our community with the opportunity to yarn without judgement and provides a culturally safe space to speak about their needs, worries or concerns.
If you, or someone you know, are feeling worried or no good, we encourage you to connect with 13YARN on 13 92 76 (24 hours/7 days) and talk with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter.
This is your story; your journey and we will take the time to listen. No shame, no judgement, safe place to yarn. We’re here for you.
We have co-designed this line using Lifeline expertise with several Aboriginal mental health professionals including NACCHO, Black Dog Institute Aboriginal Lived Experience team and the Centre for Excellence in Suicide Prevention, along with input from Torres Strait Islander, remote, regional, and urban peoples with lived experience.
We work to explore options for ongoing support, and community members will always be reassured they will be connected to another Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person who will understand where they are coming from and value knowing HOW to listen, without judgement or shame.

Supporting Children With Neurodiversity – Article
Neurodiversity is an umbrella term that refers to the diversity in brain functioning associated with a range of developmental conditions and experiences. Evidence suggests that conventional counselling approaches may not be as effective for neurodiverse children, since these individuals may need additional support to learn. This practice paper provides an overview of principles and strategies that can help practitioners to support children with neurodiversity to engage in counselling and reflective learning.
Key Messages:
- Emerging evidence suggests that a range of developmental conditions and experiences can be associated with neurodiversity.
- A psychological assessment is needed to confirm a child’s neurocognitive status, and it can be helpful to support a family to pursue an assessment if this is deemed appropriate.
- Children with neurodiversity may have more difficulty in reflective learning, and in developing behavioural and emotional control.
- Children who experience neurodiversity may need additional supports to help them engage with and benefit from counselling, develop new skills, participate in learning environments, and develop self-regulation.
- Children with neurodiversity can become more engaged with learning in the context of an environment that is characterised by structure and predictability, and that is scaffolded by visual supports and simplified adult-child interactions.
- Children with neurodiversity cannot control their sensory sensitivities and how they respond to the sensory world. They can be supported to understand how the sensory world affects them and be taught to use behavioural strategies to manage this impact.
- Children’s adaptive functioning can be extended by understanding the barriers that exist for each child as a learner; and using explicit and systematic techniques to gradually improve their independence in manageable increments.

The Strengthening Rural Communities program accepts applications any time. FRRR considers applications and makes grant distributions on a quarterly basis.

The Strengthening Rural Communities program gives small rural, regional and remote communities across Australia the opportunity to access funds that can benefit and help secure their future prosperity. Grants are available for a broad range of initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities.

The Strengthening Rural Communities program accepts applications any time. FRRR considers applications and makes grant distributions on a quarterly basis.
