World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Every year on June 15, we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a globally recognised day to highlight the importance of dignity, respect, and safety for older people.
Elder Abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and even neglect. Unfortunately, it often goes unreported and unnoticed, especially when it is behind closed doors. WEEAD is a time to speak up, raise awareness, and encourage action.
TIn 2025, the theme "Right;'s First - Preventing ELder ABuse in a Changing Aged Care Landscape" calls attention to the urgent need to place human rights at the centre of aged care reform. As the Aged Care system continues to evolve, we must ensure that older people are not just passive recipients of service but are empowered to make choices, voice concerns, and live free from abuse, neglect, or explotation.
This WEAAD, let's recommit to putting the rights of older people first, in every home, service, policy and conversation.
For more information, visit the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) website.

Support for getting the care you need

The Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) offers free, independent aged care advocacy to help you speak to your provider about your needs. Advocates can also help you understand your rights and explore options. You can call OPAN's Aged Care Advocacy line on 1800 700 600.
If you are concerned about the quality of your care, you can make a compliant to:
- fix a problem right away
- improve your care
- help other people with the same issue.
If talking to your aged care provider doesn't fix the issue, you can escalate the compliant to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission - 1800 951 822.

Registered Supporters in My Aged Care
If you have a representative in My Aged Care on 30th June 2025, they will become your registered supporter on 1st July 2025. You don't need to do anything right now if you're happy with this.
Under the new Aged Care Act, your registered supporters can help you make and communicate your own decisions about aged care, if you want them to.
Before 1st July, if you have regular and/or authorised representations in My Aged Care, you should speak to them about your wishes and whether you want them to become your registered supporter.
If you don't want your current My Aged Care representatives to become your registered supporters, you or your representative will need to let My Aged Care know before 30 June 2025. This is called 'opting out'. You can do this by:
- phoning My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, or
- through your My Aged Care Online Account.
From 1st July you can request to remove a registered supporter at any time online or by calling My Aged Care.
